Training is an important part of what we do. We train throughout the year and in all weathers - good and bad. This training ensures that we are constantly learning new skills and refreshing old ones. |
|
Training is held every Wednesday night as well as various weekends through out the year and can be out on the moor or based at our Rescue Centre. Our training covers first aid and casualty care, navigation, use of communications equipment, search techniques, incident site management, stretcher handling, casualty evacuation, Search and Rescue exercises and much more. Every member is issued a log book and must complete this before becoming a callout member. Once becoming a callout member it is important to continue to attend training to make sure that everyone keeps up the high standard that our demanding role calls for. |

Joint training is also held with other teams from the group and outside the region (such as with Cornwall). This training happens about four times a year and helps members to learn new skills and discuss ways of doing things that they might not have thought of. A training weekend is held every year that all four teams attend. Other specialist training that the team members receive include helicopter training, swift water training, rope skills and working with Search and Rescue Dogs (we currently have four active dogs at Tavistock and three in training). |
| To give the professional voluntary service that DSRT provides, the training of all members is regarded to be highly important and therefore must be thorough. As a training member you will be required to spend anything from six months to a year attending the training meetings organised by the Team before being considered for callout membership. If you are interested in applying to become a member of our Team then please either contact the training officer or fill in the downloadable application form and return it to us. Read Training Through The Eyes of a Trainee for more information. | ![]() Callout member helping a trainee with navigation |
If your application is successful you will be invited to attend a day's induction (where we get to know you and you get to know us and exactly what we do).
